Tech Tree
The farthest frontier is a dangerous uncharted domain that will require your people to adapt to their surroundings in order to tap into the vast resources at their disposal, and to contend with new threats. You can do so through the Tech Tree.
Inside the Tech Tree, you will find vast options on how to proceed, divided into 4 tiers. Each tier is unlocked by either upgrading the Town Center or by investing sufficient Knowledge in the Tech Tree. At the beginning, the tech available will be largely limited to supporting your early population, such as improving foraging, fishing, or the production of firewood, but this will quickly change as your settlement advances, culminating in unlocking epic Monuments.
In Tier 2 and above, you will find new buildings, upgrades, improvements to your military, and various technologies that will ensure your people continue to thrive in the frontier.
Knowledge
Knowledge is spent within the Tech Tree to unlock new technologies. If you have Knowledge available, and meet the prerequisites, you can activate a technology by pressing Left-click.
When your humble settlement starts out, you will already be generating Knowledge passively through the Town Center, culminating in your first discovery just a few months later.
The Town Center will be enough to get you started with a few points in the Tech Tree, but eventually you will want to accelerate your progress to keep up with the ordeals that lie ahead.
Technology
Within the Tech Tree itself, the are technologies that improve your Knowledge generation. If you want new discoveries faster, they are a good investment. The first technology in this path improves the passive generation of your Town Center, but later technologies improve the output of your Academy.
Knowledge Buildings
The second step to accelerating your discoveries is by constructing “Knowledge” buildings. These are structures that, upon first completion, will immediately generate a new discovery. Knowledge buildings are denoted by a scroll icon within the build menu (ex. the School).
Tomes of Knowledge

As your villagers explore the area, they may stumble upon the remnants of past expeditions into the frontier. When excavated, these salvage sites will contain valuable resources, but they can also reveal Tomes of Knowledge. When acquired, a Tome of Knowledge immediately generates a new discovery.
Tomes of Knowledge can also be found when destroying raider camps, and occasionally offered for sale by traveling merchants, who will gladly share the tomes for substantial sums of gold.
Academy
Lastly, there is the vaunted Academy. This central structure is where most new discoveries are made through the hard work of scholars. Scholars will do their best scrawling notes in the dirt, but if you really want to give them a boost, then you will want to get your paper industry up and running. With paper, Scholars will speed up their work significantly.
Upgrading the Academy to Tier 2 will net you a significant boost as you will be able to employ additional Scholars.
Like many buildings, the Academy has an upkeep, which must be maintained to keep it running. If the Academy shuts down due to lack of funding, then new discoveries will slow down.
